Working on recycled doors, thinking about the space between mom and me, listening to Rural Alberta Advantage sing about their grandfather in the ground and it dawns on me, I was watching the Grammy Awards  for a reason…what???.
Okay, lets’ go back. I hate and by hate, I mean I have never gotten into but do appreciate country music (note: I grew up listening to the worst country music ever: Oak Ridge Boys and Curstal Gayle and yes, I do mean Curstal,  not Crystal, as that is what my father called her.) But the other night on the Grammy’s a country song was on about going back to a house just to be there for a minute and revisit the memories with a promise to leave.  I seriously had to fight back tears as I realized I could never go back to the window in my family dining room to check to see if my date was there. I could never again sit in the family room with my brother laughing about SNL or yell at my sister in the bathroom. What happens, how do these moments slip away? Kate Bush: “Give me these moments back” (She’s Having a Baby is my favorite movie/song of all time) It is all coming together. The art, the tears, the life I have lived to this moment and the constant fear that my children will grow up and leave me and my pretending that I am sooooooo good with that.

This surfacing series is such a huge life commentary on then and future and the present. I so NEVER live in the present always the past, with sadness that I cannot go back OR all the things I have to get done in the future to make my life better then….frick when is then we are never there. The surfacing, when is it? Am I only in the present when I am painting. I need to meditate. I always say I am going to when Oprah talks about it and yet when I think about it it makes me giggle with the ridiculousness of it. Just sitting quiet,  thinking…hilarious aren’t there things to accomplish????
When is the now?
Is that why I must paint? Because that is the only time I am in it? Or, am I missing it entirely…I am missing it, when the hell do I surface or is that a joke? It is not funny, I am not laughing.

9/2/10: Okay here goes, (deep breath) I lost my job two weeks ago.  I was an art teacher at a private school for ten years here in Sacramento.  It feels right now like it was more like my identity then just my job. I lost myself, like who I was as a person outside of being a mother and wife. This job made me delighted and happy to research great art and artists and plan for an art show to show off all the kids hard work.  I was not prepared for how much the change would wreck my being.  I was already in a place of transition with my youngest headed off to Kindergarten in a week.   I was blindsided and totally unprepared. This got me thinking again about the role of motherhood and how it is so unknown until you are in it. My good friend just had a baby 8 weeks ago and she has been totally altered by her new change.  We were talking yesterday about all the new things you notice when you are a mother. She saw a pack of BOB strollers with 10+ women doing exercise in the park. The number of questions that immediately brought to life: 1: why have I never noticed a train of strollers before I had a baby?  2: do you have to have  BOB stroller to join?  3a: are there ranks of being a cool mom and 3b: what rank am I in? 3c: how are ranks determined?  I can remember thoughts like these going through my head as I began this baby process and now we are off to kindergarten.  Another interesting MOM fact: you have to date other moms.  It's true, at the park you really do feel like you have to come up with a pick up line at the sand box.  "How old is your little Girl?" "oh, its a boy" I am sooooo not getting her number!
Surfacing, transition, drowning in the unknown and surfacing again. Each day is different. I wonder how I will feel on Tuesday when my house is quiet for 3 hours straight. Will I job hunt for 15 minutes or obsess for 2 hours.  Will I paint and prepare for my show? I hope so.  I will still be a mom but what will my new surfacing prospect be??? who knows. This piece is named for my new mom friend: Rachel. Rachel: this to shall pass and then you will be.......I will get back to you, promise!

8/30/10: I continue to struggle with the message from my earlier surfacing post. I have discussed it with many friends

and have received some great feedback from several sources.
I am bogged down with the length of motherhood and the moments of long summer break days contrasted with my youngest starting Kindergarten in a week.  He was just born yesterday!!! and yet we had the LLLOOOOONNNNNGGGEEESSSSSSTTTTTT day ever today struggling to fill his time with something other then wii.  I am struck also by the time in which our children are traditionally "ours" and when they still need you long past that moment.  I received news last week that a friend had a seizure in his car and at the hospital discovered it was a brain tumor.  He is an only child,  he is 35, strong, healthy, vibrant man.  In an instant his Mama was transformed into a full-time mother again.  The strength it must take to act like a super mom in that situation. The courage and love she must have to get him through this time with happiness, humor and grace.  I want to believe that I would be strong enough to pull that off for my children.  I recently read "The Middle Place" written by  SF native going through something strikingly similar.  It is a beautiful book that is inspiring and hopeful.  I wish these things for my friend and his Mama: Carolyn.

8.10.08: reading a fun new novel for the beach trip. I heard about it on CBS sunday morning, my favorite show, which makes me an old lady according to my friend Kelly. I have to sell the book a little because it is sold in the young adult section. And YES, I am pretty sure it was right next to Sweet Valley High books. With that said, it was written by a fellow Mom who had a crazy dream one night about a vampire and she woke the next morning with a new life dream and started to bring her vision to life. It is a best seller now being made into a movie, releasing this December. She is also releasing her fourth book in the series. It is a light read with teenage moments in it, but perfect for a foggy week at the beach. More importantly it is a lesson to us all to put ourselves out there. She was not a writer (I am not either as my spelling/grammar errors give away) She had a good idea and she went for it, kudos to you and to anyone else giving it a shot!!!!: TWILIGHT

8.3.08: Most of the time in your life as a mother you are hands on with your children, responding to their needs, reprimanding them for their bad behavior and praising them for good.
